Your nanny needs a new computer

computer-on-fire.png

Got this from a coworker:

Our Nanny came to me with a problem about their computer and I want to be sure I am giving them good advice. Her husband tells me they are receiving the following message when they try to reboot and do a recovery.

“Windows could not start because the following file
is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system”

Then I guess he hits “ok” and this message then comes
up and repeats over and over everytime he hits “ok”

“Problem in extracting process couldn’t be opened: Windows\system32\config\ SecEvent.Evt”
“Problem in extracting process couldn’t be opened: Windows\system32\config\TempKeylog”
“Problem in extracting process couldn’t be opened: ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\SymantecShared\ccSet.dll”

What do you think is going on with their computer and what should I suggest they do? Take it to Best Buy and have them try to fix it? Or tell them they need a new computer?

Computers suck for non-wizards. I like to call this phenomenon “Cruft”, thanks to a funny article by Verity Stob. Over time, Windows boxes get less and less reliable, particularly family computers. This is due to a several factors:

  1. No IT shop is maintaining the system to keep it healthy.
  2. Lots of software is installed and uninstalled over time; bug-fix updates are often overlooked or unavailable.
  3. Spyware makes all this worse.
  4. All this is made still worse by the fact that Windows gives you full Administrative access by default, so it’s easier for damage to be done.
  5. Crashes become more frequent, usually requiring power resets; this can further corrupt critical system files, resulting a cascade of problems until the computer is totally useless.

All in all, a computer in a family setting for more than a couple of years will often feel like it’s irredeemable. The good news: the hardware is almost never the problem. The bad news: the computer is still three years old, and too slow to run the latest software and games even under optimum conditions.

What to do?
