Syma S107/S107G R/C Helicopter Review

As posted to Amazon. *****

The R/C car market, as far as I know, has a terrible problem. The problem with the R/C car market is that you can't really find a fun, fast and durable R/C car for less than around $150.

If you had told me that there's a remote control helicopter that's any fun at all for less than $100, I wouldn't have believed it. But it's true. This thing is a steal for the durability and entertainment value.

Let's get some caveats out of the way.

  1. It's controlled with infrared (IR), not radio. That's part of why it's so inexpensive. You need to be reasonably close to it, and there has to be clear line of sight between controller and heli.
  2. Because sunlight interferes with IR, and because it's susceptible to wind and turbulence, you can't really do much with this outdoors. It's made and sold for indoor use.
  3. It's a 3-channel heli, not 4-channel. You have control over up/down, turn left/right, forward/backward. You don't have side-to-side control as you'd get with a 4-channel heli. This is an advantage for new pilots.
  4. If you are careless, you can wreck it pretty quickly.

Okay. If you have clear expectations and fly carefully, this thing is an unbelievable bargain. The battery lasts for several minutes of flight. It's very stable and easy to fly. And in my own experience it is quite resistant to crash damage. I have abused the hell out of this thing and it just keeps on taking it.

This is an ideal gift for anyone who likes toys and gadgets. I know 8 year olds that would do very well with this toy. If you've read this far you've hesitated too long. Buy now!
